Well-known as a detention center for political dissidents, Doftana Prison once counted Nicolae Ceaușescu among its prisoners.

In 1937, before he rose to lead the Romanian Communist Party, Ceaușescu was imprisoned here for two years. He was jailed on accusations of being "a dangerous Communist agitator," which as history went on to record, was a sign of things to come.

Translation: “Here in Doftana's place of confinement, Romanian antifascist detainees were chained. The bestial terror and the sufferings endured could not shake their determined will to fight and their belief in the victory of the working class.”
