In the northeastern German forest between Himmelpfort and Lychen, is a pair of bunkers very similar to the one I explored in Bulgaria. It is one of two Special Weapon Bunkers built by the Soviet Armed Forces in the GDR to house nuclear warheads close to the western front during the Cold War.
Originally constructed around 1968 and in use until shortly after the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1990, this pair of bunkers could apparently store between 160 and 200 nuclear warheads in its underground rooms. Each bunker's entrances face different directions, a safeguard against the nearby impact of a direct bomb strike.
Today, both bunkers at this location are inaccessible and closed up. Dirt mounds cover the large blast doors, secondary exits have been covered with concrete blocks, and only small holes let the bats in and out.
